The mission of the Louisiana Alliance for Biotechnology (LAB) is to
enhance biotechnology research and business development throughout Louisiana. The goals
which we have set for LAB in order to accomplish this mission are to facilitate:
- the development of an interactive consortium of university and private sector
researchers in molecular biology and biotechnology.
- the transfer of scientific advances into the private sector.
- enhancement of the university academic environment and community quality of life through
economic development associated with increased private sector research and development.
- development and funding of research to improve and expand Louisianas agriculture
and industry.
- coordination of state, federal, academic and business sector efforts to improve economic
conditions within the state through economic development in the biotechnology sector.
LABs initial membership drive will take place during the Spring of 1999, and our
current business plan sets forth specific action steps and budgets for achieving these
goals. We feel that our co-sponsorship, with several divisions of the American Chemical
Society, of a Biotechnology Symposium in New Orleans, August 22-26, 1999, will provide
this member-driven organization with significant momentum for entering the new millennium
as a valuable player in the development of biotechnology research and business in
Louisiana.
